Skitchin Fest 2.0 arrives this weekend, and I know a lot of us have been waiting for it. In preparation, Put Out Your Own Records has released A Hella Skitchin’ Compilation Vol. 2 on bandcamp that will be available at the show so you can familiarize yourself with the sounds and people you can expect to be partying with. The mini fest doubles as the “I Won’t Forget Any of You Vol. 2” zine release party, and as if that wasn’t enough, triples as the release party for Skitchin x Jason’s Kitchen hot sauce! Or, as advertised: “A showcase of bands either featured in the [Skitchin Music] zine or with close ties to it. A celebration of diversity and unity in punx. A love letter to everyone involved. Now with more hugs and hot sauce!”
With all the artists on the compilation and performing throughout the weekend, this is definitely a non-definitive highlight of the current GR punk scene. With so much talent lurking under the surface in this city, it’s hard to wrangle all that down into one weekend and a compilation CD. However, Volume 2 does do a great job of turning over a few rocks and bringing us 16 awesome tracks from the underground.
This compilation kicks off with “An Instant Hit” by Thomas Gun and Adum Sureman, then immediately calms down with the catchy, folky acoustic sounds of Maggie May and Radiator Hospital. Tracks 4 and 5 by Elroy Meltzer and Answering Machine respectively, stand out as two of the best vocal performances on the comp, and now I’m keeping my eyes peeled for their names on fliers around town. Track 6 is brought to us by Minkus and named after the creative mastermind behind Skitchin’ himself, Tyler Dykema, which (besides being a solid emo/punk jam) transitions the comp into the harder latter half. Each track starts getting more intense/hardcore, ending with blasts from Dead Weight and No/Breaks. This comp is a smooth ride through the eclectic artists you can often find in the pages of Skitchin Zine, and some you can catch in person at the Tip Top Deluxe this weekend! Be sure to support and pick up a physical copy if you can. See the flier below for show details. Listen here: https://putoutyourownrecords.bandcamp.com/
